An announcement reaches everyone who said yes; the event chat is where you talk. Which to use, and what each one does.
For: Guests, Hosts
A host can reach you about an event in two ways, and they are not the same. An announcement is a notification everyone gets. The chat is a conversation.
What an announcement isOnly a host can send one. It reaches everyone who said yes, including people on the waitlist, through the alerts they have turned on — and on Telegram, if they connected it. It also appears in the event chat and stays pinned at the top until the next one arrives.
An announcement can't be taken back. A host can delete it from the chat, which removes it there, but the notification has already gone out.
What the event chat isThe chat is for the hosts and the guests who have a spot. People on the waitlist can't see it, and nothing from it is sent to Telegram.
While the app is open you see messages arrive without an alert. When you open a chat with unread messages, a line marks where they start, and while you read further up, a button takes you down to new ones. While the app is closed, a busy chat does not alert you for every message: you get one alert for the conversation, and at most another an hour later, until you open it. The chat is deleted 7 days after the event ends. Once the event is over, the chat shows the day it closes.
Any host can delete a message in the chat, and anyone can delete their own. A deleted message turns into Message deleted for everyone at once, including people who have the chat open. To copy the text of a message, tap ··· beside it, then Copy.
Which one to useUse an announcement for something nobody can afford to miss: a new address, a different time, a cancellation, something to bring. Use the chat for questions, lifts and everything else. Anyone in the chat can reply to an announcement there, and the reply is an ordinary message. Links in announcements and messages open in your browser or the matching app when you tap them.
Tip
On the waitlist you still get every announcement. The chat opens to you when you get a spot, pinned announcement and all.
If a message in the chat is abusive, tap ··· beside it, then Report, and pick a reason. The Party Up team reviews every report, and the person you report is not told who reported them, though in a direct chat they may still guess it was you. Your report keeps a copy of that message and of the few before it, so we can still read them after the chat is deleted. Whoever runs the chat can also delete the message straight away: a host in an event chat, a group admin or moderator in a group chat. In a direct chat only its author can. Reporting works in direct and group chats too.

Under Alert types, Announcements from hosts and Chat messages are separate: turning off one leaves the other on.
